Surcharge & cess

A surcharge applies on top of the income tax once total income crosses ₹50 lakh. It is the same under both regimes, except the new regime caps it at 25%.

Total incomeSurcharge
₹50 lakh – ₹1 crore10%
₹1 crore – ₹2 crore15%
₹2 crore – ₹5 crore25%
Above ₹5 crore37% (old) / 25% (new)

On top of tax plus surcharge, a 4% health & education cess applies to everyone. Marginal relief limits the surcharge so that crossing a threshold never costs more than the extra income earned.

Did Budget 2026 change anything?

No. The income tax slabs for FY 2026-27 (AY 2027-28) were retained unchanged from FY 2025-26 under both regimes, so every table on this page applies to both years.
